The Connection Between Smoking and Hearing Loss

When someone told me that there was a connection between smoking and hearing loss the only thing I could think to say was “What?”

What Will They Think of Next?

So it wasn’t enough that we were killing ourselves with cigarettes so they told us that we were killing other people with our second hand smoke. Apparently that wasn’t enough either because now they’re telling us that we can lose our hearings because we smoke. What’s next? Stop that or you’ll go blind? Oh wait, that’s something else entirely isn’t it? Where was I? Oh my god what if it causes memory loss?

Fear Not; There Is Help For You

No I’m not talking about a hearing aid! There’s something on the market these days that the manufacturers have elected to call the electronic cigarette. It looks like you’re smoking real cigarettes, it feels like you’re smoking a real cigarette; it can even taste like you’re smoking a real cigarette. Guess what… You’re not smoking a real cigarette. All that is inhaled and exhaled is water vapor; and even that can come in a vast array of flavors (including tobacco for you unimaginative types).

You can even get your nicotine from these make believe cigarettes, and they are far more distinguished than those candy ones you used to run around with after mom and dad lit the end for you.

Signs of Hearing Loss

Many people start to lose their hearing as they get older. It’s possible for younger people to have hearing loss, too, but it’s not as likely. If you work in a job where you’re exposed to a lot of loud noise, or if you’re getting up in years, it may be time to have your hearing checked.

Do People Mumble a Lot?

When people get hearing loss, they often begin to complain that people mumble too much. If you’re having trouble with mumbling friends and relatives, part of your DIYHealth plan should be to get checked for hearing loss.

Trouble Hearing Certain Pitches?

Add “get hearing checked” to your DIY Health checklist, too, if certain pitches have become inaudible. It’s usually very high tones or very low tones, but any pitches can be the ones that are starting to disappear. No matter which pitch you’re having trouble hearing, getting checked is a good choice.

Having your hearing checked is non-invasive and doesn’t hurt. It won’t take long for you to know if there are problems with your hearing, and a hearing aid may help you better understand the world around you, so you can enjoy more conversations and more of what life has to offer.
